The current Heart of Illinois
Cenference represents a merger between the Sangamon Valley Conference and
the now-defunct Mid State Conference. Five teams come from the SVC
(Blue Ridge, Fisher, GCMS, LeRoy, and
Tri-Valley), and eight teams come from the MSC (Dee Mack, El Paso-Gridley,
Fieldcrest, Flanagan,Heyworth, Lexington, Ridgeview, and Tremont).
The first two years of
the HOIC saw multiple teams and individuals participate in the state
finals of their sport:
TEAMS:
The Ridgeview cheerleading team placed eighth in the small squad division
state finals in 2007.
The Tri-Valley girls cross country team placed ninth in the state finals in
2006 and 19th in 2007.
The Tremont girls cross country team placed eighth in the state finals in
2007.
The Tri-Valley softball team reached the state finals in 2007 and placed
third at the state finals in 2008.
The Tremont boys track and field team placed fourth in the state finals in
2007.
The Flanagan volleyball team placed fourth in the state finals in 2006.
The Dee Mack volleyball team placed fourth in the state finals in 2007.
The GCMS wrestling team placed fourth in the state finals in 2007.
The Flanagan Falcons girls basketball team were the state champions in 2008.
INDIVIDUALS:
Parker Thompson of Tremont and Brian Peterson of Fieldcrest placed
first and second, respectively, in the boys cross country finals in 2007.
Thompson was also the state champion in the 1600 meter run in 2007 and the
800 meter run in 2008. Peterson was the state champion in the 3200
meter run in 2008.
Stephanie Brown of Tri-Valley placed third in 2006 and second in 2007 in the
girls cross country finals. She also was the state champion in the 800
meter run and placed second in the 1600 meter run in 2007 and 2008.
Tyler Wilfley of Tri-Valley placed 3rd at the 2008 wrestling finals.
Ben Asmus of Heyworth was the state champion in the 400 meter dash in 2008.
The tradition of the traveling trophy
in HOIC boys basketball dates back to 1920. "The Little Brown Jug" served as
the traveling trophy for the Tri-Valley Conference from 1920 to 1948, and
the Kickapoo Conference had a tomahawk as its trophy from 1948 to 1985.
When a school gained possession of the trophy, they tied a ribbon to it with
that school's name and players, much like HOIC teams still do today.
